Why does my iPhone save photos as .heic?

Since iOS 11, the iPhone saves photos by default in HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container), a format Apple adopted because it compresses up to 50% better than JPEG at similar quality, saving storage space.

The catch is that HEIC has almost no support outside the Apple ecosystem: Windows needs an extra codec to view it, Android and most websites and editing programs simply won't open it. JPG and PNG, on the other hand, open absolutely everywhere.

Why can't I open the photos someone sent me from an iPhone?

They're most likely .heic files, the format the iPhone has used by default since iOS 11. They aren't corrupted - the program you're trying to open them with (Windows without the HEIF codec, Android, many web forms) just doesn't support that format. Convert them here and they'll open fine anywhere.

Does this work in Chrome or Firefox, if those browsers don't support HEIC?

Yes. This tool doesn't rely on the browser knowing how to display HEIC natively (something only Safari partially does) - it ships its own HEIC decoder compiled to WebAssembly, running inside the page itself. That's why it works the same in Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari.

Do I lose quality converting HEIC to JPG?

Very little. The image is decoded at its original resolution and colors, then re-encoded as JPG at a high quality setting (roughly JPEG 92%) or as PNG with no loss at all.

Does this work with Live Photos?

It converts the still photo. A Live Photo is actually a .heic (the photo) plus a short .mov (the video) bundled together; this tool converts the image part. If you need the video, use our MOV to MP4 converter.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The entire process, including decoding the HEIC file, happens in your browser. The image never leaves your computer, and it isn't saved anywhere - it's gone as soon as you close or refresh this tab.

Is there a size limit?

A max of 30MB per file is recommended. Regular iPhone HEIC photos weigh a lot less than that, except in edge cases like burst shots or very detailed Portrait mode photos.
